Naturalmente, tutto il primo strepitoso disco dei Clash parla di quello che e’ successo qui a Londra. Ci sono differenze fondamentali fra questi riots e quelli di venticinque anni fa, ma le atmosfere descritte in quel folgorante esordio, teso, nervoso, nodoso, sono le stesse.
A molti viene da associare l’accaduto con “Anarchy in the Uk”, dei Pistols, ma non e’ un paragone abbastanza calzante, secondo me. E “London’s Burning” non e’ un pezzo sui riots, quanto sulla noia e l’alienazione che portano alla violenza, uno stadio precedente. Pezzi che parlano dell’esperienza conclamata della violenza sono “Police and Thieves”, qui sotto, “Cheat”, “Remote Control” e, naturalmente, “White Riot”.
Ma il brano che descrive meglio di qualunque altro quello che sta succedendo qui in questi giorni – se non altro per via della descrizione scientifica delle sensazioni di esaltazione date dal distruggere le cose degli altri – viene dai massimi Dead Kennedys e s’intitola, lapidariamente, “Riot”. Fa sembrare i Clash un gruppo quasi romantico, tanto ruvida, vuota e irredimibile e’ la violenza qui descritta. Perche’ questi riots hanno molto piu’ a che vedere con i disordini descritti dall’hardcore americano, da sempre depoliticizzato, che con quello londinese degli anni della Thatcher. Se questo brano eccezionale ha un “messaggio” (parola da talent show) e’ proprio quello dell’inutilita’ politica della violenza, anche quando sembri equivocamente esaltarne le caratteristiche.
Ho gia’ postato questo video in passato in occasione delle rivolte studentesche dei mesi scorsi, a cui tra l’altro si riferiscono alcune delle immagini montate con questo video, ma credo che vada riproposto, anche solo per via della performance di Jello Biafra, by far the most intelligent man in Hardcore Punk. L’aggettivo “viscerale” non le rende giustizia.
